Purpose

The purpose of this fundraising dinner is to bring together a community of kindred spirits in support of GTEC’s Neighbourhood in the 21st Century exhibit. This exhibit is a first of its kind, arts and culture informed exhibit designed to inspire climate adaptation in local communities. Combining arts and culture with environmental action, the Neighbourhood in the 21st Century exhibit features a unique partnership with children and youth from Fraser Academy, fostering a sense of creativity, youthful hope and agency. The exhibit is scheduled to open September 19, 2026 at the Arbutus Neighborhood House.

Keynote Address

Miranda Massie’s presentation will address the transformational power of arts and cultural programming for climate engagement based on her experience as the founding director of The Climate Museum in the US.

In 2014, Miranda left a career in social justice litigation to lay the groundwork for The Climate Museum, which in 2018 had its breakout year of public programming. She has led the creation of the Museum’s activist, cultural approach to community engagement with climate, recognizing that most people are worried about climate change but unsure how to take meaningful action. The Museum has now secured a permanent home that will open in 2030 near Hudson Yards in New York City.

Miranda has been featured in national publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The New Yorker. She is a Public Voices Fellow with the OpEd Project and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and is the 2026 recipient of the NYC Environmental Law Leadership Institute’s Leadership in Action Award.

Miranda’s numerous guest teaching engagements include the Masters programs in Museum Studies at NYU, Architecture and Landscape Architecture at RISD, Arts Administration and Policy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Climate and Society at Columbia University, and Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Prior to her leadership in climate engagement, Miranda distinguished herself as a civil rights litigator, earning a series of notable honours and fellowships. She holds a J.D. from New York University, an M.A. from Yale University, and a B.A. from Cornell University.

The Exhibit

Climate change presents urgent challenges that neighbourhoods must address to protect people, homes, and shared spaces. Local adaptation—practical steps taken by communities to respond to climate impacts—is essential for sustainable living.

Neighbourhood in the 21st Century leverages the power of collective action and creativity, demonstrating how arts and culture can spark dialogue and empower meaningful change.

Through art, the exhibit makes climate adaptation accessible, relatable, and actionable for all ages. This exhibit exemplifies a unique approach that places the voices of children and youth at the forefront. Children and young people from Fraser Academy will create visual interpretations of climate adaptation, illustrating both challenges and hopeful solutions for neighbourhoods. The displays will cover topics such as the built environment, mobility and energy use.

As the inaugural project of the GTEC Climate Response Centre, this exhibit will take place at Arbutus Neighbourhood House from September 19 to September 24, 2026. We invite funders, sponsors, and partners to support this transformative event and help shape resilient neighbourhoods for the future.
